About This Place

Located in the heart of Gastonia, North Carolina, RayNathan's is a standout destination for lovers of authentic Southern barbecue and soul-satisfying comfort food. This vibrant restaurant invites you to experience a carefully crafted menu that celebrates slow-smoked meats, bold flavors, and the warm, inviting atmosphere of a true neighborhood eatery.

The culinary focus here is unmistakably Southern BBQ, featuring dishes that are both hearty and nuanced. From the moment you dig into the Beef Brisket Plate or savor the layers of flavor in the Stephen’s Brisket Sandwich, you’ll notice the expert balance of smoky, savory, and tender textures. The Pulled Pork Sandwich and Rib Plate offer equally indulgent experiences, with each bite revealing a deliciously smoky depth enhanced by RayNathan’s selection of four signature BBQ sauces that range from tangy to sweet and spicy.

Beyond the meats, the sides are equally compelling — creamy, rich Collard Greens and perfectly seasoned BBQ Street Corn elevate each meal, while the Cornbread and golden Smoked Chicken Wings add an irresistible crispy contrast. A standout sweet finish awaits with the legendary Banana Pudding, often described by patrons as transcendent. As one local customer noted, it was a “spiritual experience” — a perfect balance of sweetness and comfort that lingers in the memory long after the last bite.

The dining experience at RayNathan’s is casual yet buzzing with energy. The walls adorned with vibrant artwork and music-inspired décor create a lively backdrop that sparks conversation and adds personality to every visit. This is not just a meal; it’s a destination for friends and families to gather, share a hearty plate, and enjoy a taste of Southern tradition with a modern twist.

Complement your meal with a thoughtfully curated drink selection, ranging from crisp lagers like Stone Buenaveza Salt & Lime Lager and Howdy Western Pilsner to adventurous sours like the Electro Platypus Rainbow Sherbet Sour. If you prefer something lighter or fruitier, their hard ciders and spiked seltzers offer refreshing options, perfect for pairing with the smoky flavors of the BBQ.

Authenticity shines through in every aspect of RayNathan’s—from the first step ordering at the counter to the attentive table service that ensures your glass never stays empty too long. Diners appreciate the chill and welcoming attitude of the staff, making each visit feel like coming home.

Whether you’re a local or just passing through Gastonia, RayNathan’s promises an unforgettable Southern BBQ experience that embodies warmth, community, and mouthwatering dishes crafted with care. Dive into the rich mac and cheese, try the crispy fried okra, or savor a half rack of ribs glazed to perfection. Every visit offers a new flavor adventure that stays with you long after you leave.

Their mac and cheese was incredibly rich and full of a gentle smoky flavor that made every bite memorable. I tried fried okra for the very first time and it honestly felt like the perfect introduction because it was crisp, warm, and surprisingly addictive. I am already looking forward to returning and bringing my friends and family along for another great meal.

On the fence with this review. Some things I liked. Some things I didn't. The pulled pork and beans were an 8. I paid for a sausage link ($6) not worth a buck fifty. I don't know what was going on with the mac n cheese but I did not like it. The service was slow. Tea glasses stayed empty for the most part. I'd consider giving it another try next time in the area.

Delicious and very unique place. The place is covered with art pieces from a band and is a great conversation starter. This place had like huge biscuits instead of hushpuppies, the sauces were really good. We always go in a group of 4 and get something different to try. The smoked turkey was my favorite, and the ribs orosbly 2nd dor me but we're popular for my husband. They have a glaze on them and just delicious. The Mac and cheese, fried okra, collard greens and street corn were really good! No vinegar on the greens but other than that very good food it used to be years ago graham fish camp so nice to see it be a bbq place. The bbq was very tender, the brisket was amazing the salt ring melted in your mouth. We got to go some banana pudding and cobbler they were ok, banana pudding was runny and not fluffy like normal?? All in all a very cool experience. Will be back.

Tldr: I will got out of my way to come back. My first visit and employees were chill even with it being pretty busy. First you walk up to the counter to order, then find an open seat. A server will swing by to grab your ticket and bring you your food. I tried the brisket with BBQ corn, Ray Nathan's stew. brisket is amazing, bret bark, buttery fro. The fat cap. The stew started lite and then got delightfully spicy as it went on. Only miss was the corn. It was kind of elote style and I believe it would be better if they just went full on street corn. Could also be that it was served kind of cool. Not room temp, but definitely not as warm as the rest of the food. All in all I'll make the effort to come back next time I'm in town.

First time trying Ray Nathan’s, we live 3 minutes away. I had a spiritual experience with the banana pudding - literally THE BEST banana pudding, top 10 desserts, OF MY LIFE. i took one bite and immediately called the restaurant and told them to give the person who made it a forehead kiss. Also super comfort food for me and my fiancé - good meats, sides just like mom makes, and generous portions with great quality. If I wasn’t already engaged, I’d propose to Ray Nathan the man himself. That nanner puddin was BODIED by me

We really enjoyed our lunch. Easy to order, everything came out pretty fast and nice and hot. Brisket was perfectly cooked, large portion and bbq street corn was delicious.

HOLY COW! Or maybe HOLY PIG. Rarely do i find BBQ places that get it. We've been back since this pic to make sure it wasn't a fluke. I've bragged about this place to people 2 hours away because it's legit worth it. Some of the best quality Q in NC. That's not an easily obtained badge.
